Whey protein: concentrate, isolate or clear whey?
The useful differences are usually found in the ingredient list, nutrition panel, flavour system and processing—not in exaggerated marketing language.
Whey concentrate
Whey concentrate is a common protein-powder format. The exact protein, carbohydrate and fat content varies by formulation, so the nutrition panel is more useful than the product name alone.
Whey isolate
Whey isolate is processed to remove more non-protein components than a typical concentrate. Compare the actual nutrition panel, ingredients and serving size rather than assuming every isolate has the same composition.
Clear whey
Clear-whey products are formulated to make a lighter drink rather than a milkshake-style drink. Sweeteners, acids, flavourings and serving size can vary significantly between brands.
What to compare before buying
- protein amount per serving and per 100 g;
- full ingredient list and allergens;
- serving size and number of servings;
- sweeteners, flavourings and other added ingredients;
- manufacturer / responsible seller and traceability information;
- price per serving rather than tub price alone.
In Switzerland, nutrition and health claims on foods are regulated. Products should not be marketed with disease-treatment claims.
