How to Read a Certificate of Analysis (COA)

A Certificate of Analysis can be useful only when the document, tested sample and material being reviewed can be connected accurately. A high purity percentage by itself is not enough to establish identity, content, sterility, endotoxin status, elemental impurities or batch traceability.

This guide explains the main fields to review when assessing analytical documentation for laboratory research materials.

1. Identify the issuing source

Check who actually issued the report. Distinguish between an independent laboratory, a manufacturer or upstream supplier, and a document supplied by another applicant or client. The organisation named on the report matters because it helps establish the origin and context of the analysis.

2. Check the material and batch or lot

The compound name alone does not link a report to inventory. Look for a batch number, lot number or another traceable production identifier. A report from one lot should not be treated as evidence for a different lot.

3. Find the report or accession identifier

A report ID, accession number, task number or search code provides a reference for the analytical record. Where the issuing laboratory offers an official public lookup, use the identifier to compare the online record with the document.

4. Compare dates

Review sample receipt, testing and report dates where supplied. Dates help establish the sequence of the analysis and can reveal whether a document predates the stated production lot or inventory.

5. Review the analytical method

Different methods answer different questions. Examples can include LC-MS for identity, HPLC for chromatographic purity, quantitative methods for content, endotoxin assays, microbial methods and elemental analysis. The report should be read according to the method actually performed.

6. Keep analytical parameters separate

Parameter What it can address
Identity Whether the tested sample is consistent with the stated material under the reported method.
Purity The proportion represented by the target peak or material under the stated analytical method.
Content / amount The measured quantity or amount in the tested sample when a quantitative method is used.
Endotoxin Endotoxin result under the stated assay and detection limit.
Microbial / sterility testing Microbial findings under the specific method used. A microbial PCR result and a sterility test are not automatically equivalent.
Heavy metals / elemental impurities Reported elemental findings for the elements actually included in the analysis.

Important: a purity result does not prove sterility, endotoxin status, content or heavy-metal status unless those parameters were separately tested.

7. Check the units and limits

Results should be interpreted together with their units, reporting limits and method sensitivity. Words such as “pass”, “not detected” or “below limit” have meaning only in relation to the method and threshold stated on the report.

8. Verify accreditation claims carefully

If a document makes an accreditation or certification claim, review exactly what is stated and, where practical, confirm it through the relevant issuing or accreditation body. A professional-looking report or QR code is not by itself proof of accreditation.

9. Use public verification where available

An official laboratory lookup is stronger than an unverified QR code or a screenshot because it allows the report reference to be checked against the issuing source. Not every laboratory offers a public record-level verification service.

10. Confirm inventory linkage

The final question is whether the document can be connected to the actual lot being supplied. Avelqor Labs uses separate documentation labels so that independent analysis, supplier documentation and unconfirmed lot linkage are not presented as equivalent.

  • Independent Lab Verification: a third-party laboratory report is available and, where an official verification service exists, can be checked through the issuing source.
  • Supplier Documentation: the document was provided by the manufacturer or upstream supplier and is identified as such.
  • Pending Batch Linkage: a report exists, but its connection to current Avelqor inventory has not yet been confirmed.

Common documentation red flags

  • No batch or lot identifier.
  • No report, accession or task reference.
  • The client or applicant shown on the report is different from the seller and no inventory linkage is explained.
  • A purity percentage is presented as proof of unrelated parameters.
  • A QR code is described as independent verification without a confirmable issuing source.
  • Results from one production lot are applied to another lot.
  • Missing tests are implied rather than clearly marked as not tested or not provided.
