What is SS-31 / elamipretide?

SS-31 is the research name widely associated with elamipretide, a mitochondria-targeting tetrapeptide. It is also known in the literature as MTP-131 or Bendavia.

Cardiolipin and inner mitochondrial membrane research

Elamipretide selectively interacts with cardiolipin, a phospholipid of the inner mitochondrial membrane. Research links this interaction to mitochondrial cristae organization, cytochrome-c function and respiratory-chain bioenergetics.

ATP and oxidative-phosphorylation research

Cardiolipin binding has been studied in relation to improved electron transport and oxidative phosphorylation. Reviews discuss increased mitochondrial bioenergetic efficiency and ATP-production capacity under experimental conditions.

Oxidative-stress research

Earlier descriptions emphasized reactive-oxygen-species reduction, while newer work focuses more broadly on membrane electrostatics, cardiolipin-dependent proteins and mitochondrial architecture. The mechanism is therefore more complex than simply “scavenging free radicals.”

That approval applies to the regulated Forzinity drug product and indication; it does not confer approval, equivalence or clinical claims on separately supplied research material.

Preclinical and clinical programmes have investigated elamipretide in heart failure, ischemia-reperfusion injury, kidney injury, primary mitochondrial myopathy, ocular disease, muscle weakness and other disorders linked to mitochondrial dysfunction.
