What is MOTS-C?
MOTS-C is a mitochondria-derived peptide encoded within the mitochondrial 12S rRNA region. It is studied as a signaling peptide linking mitochondrial state with nuclear and whole-cell stress and metabolic responses.
AMPK and energy-sensing research
Reviews describe MOTS-C as acting through a folate-AICAR-AMPK-related pathway. AMPK is a major cellular energy sensor involved in glucose and lipid metabolism, making this pathway a central part of MOTS-C research.
Glucose uptake and insulin-resistance research
Preclinical work and reviews discuss MOTS-C in relation to skeletal-muscle glucose handling, insulin resistance and metabolic homeostasis. Much of this evidence comes from cell and animal studies rather than large human clinical trials.
Exercise and “exercise-mimetic” research
MOTS-C is strongly associated with exercise research because endogenous levels and signaling responses have been reported to change with exercise. Experimental studies discuss skeletal-muscle stress responses, metabolic adaptation and exercise performance. The phrase “exercise mimetic” is a popular shorthand, not evidence that MOTS-C replaces exercise in people.
Stress response and nuclear signaling
Under cellular stress, MOTS-C has been reported to translocate to the nucleus and regulate stress-adaptation genes, including pathways linked to antioxidant-response elements. This is one reason MOTS-C is studied in mitohormesis and cellular stress biology.
Fat metabolism and energy expenditure research
Animal research and reviews discuss thermogenesis, energy expenditure and adipose-tissue metabolism in connection with MOTS-C. These preclinical observations should not be converted into human fat-loss claims.
Aging and mitochondrial research
MOTS-C is also studied in aging, metabolic adaptation and mitochondrial-to-nuclear signaling. Human evidence remains much thinner than the preclinical literature.
