What is BPC-157?
BPC-157 is a 15-amino-acid peptide derived from a sequence associated with a gastric “body protection compound.” It has been studied mainly in cell and animal models.
Tendon and muscle-repair research
Preclinical studies have reported effects on tendon fibroblast outgrowth, cell survival and migration, including rat Achilles-tendon models. Other animal studies have examined crushed or transected muscle and tendon, with changes in vascular response and healing-related markers.
Angiogenesis and VEGF research
BPC-157 research includes angiogenesis and VEGF-related signaling. In one muscle/tendon study, investigators reported VEGF-associated angiogenic changes in vivo. Earlier rat wound models also examined granulation tissue, blood-vessel formation, collagen and tensile-strength development.
Collagen and wound-healing research
Animal wound models have investigated collagen formation, granulation tissue and mechanical wound strength. These findings are preclinical and should not be presented as proof of human tissue-healing efficacy.
Inflammation and injury-response research
Experimental models have reported changes in inflammatory-cell infiltration, myeloperoxidase activity and vascular indices after tissue injury. The evidence remains largely preclinical.
Gastrointestinal research
BPC-157 is also discussed in experimental gastrointestinal research because its parent “body protection compound” concept originated in gastric research. Online claims about stomach, bowel or ulcer treatment go beyond the current human evidence base.
What is the human evidence?
Published human clinical evidence is very limited. USADA notes that BPC-157 is not approved for human clinical use and that many promoted uses — including bone, joint and musculoskeletal repair — are unsupported by established human medical literature.
Anti-doping status
BPC-157 is prohibited under the World Anti-Doping Code framework as a non-approved substance. Athletes should treat that status separately from laboratory research discussions.
