HPLC and LC-MS are frequently referenced in research-material documentation, but the acronym alone does not tell a reviewer whether a report is useful. Procurement review should focus on what was tested, how the result is linked to the sample and whether the documentation contains enough information to interpret the result responsibly.
Start with the analytical question
Before asking for a specific method, define the question the documentation is expected to address. Chromatographic data may contribute to purity assessment, while mass-spectrometric data can contribute to identity assessment. These functions can overlap depending on the method, but they should not be treated as interchangeable without context.
For an HPLC report, request the sample and report identifiers
The report should identify the tested sample, relevant batch or lot number where available, report number and test date. Without that traceability, a chromatogram may be technically interesting but difficult to connect to the material being procured.
Request the reported result and method context
Look for the stated purity result together with enough method information to understand what the number represents. Useful documentation may include the detection approach, column or method reference, retention-time information and chromatogram. The exact level of method detail varies by laboratory, but a result should not be detached from its analytical context.
For LC-MS, request mass information tied to the sample
Identity-oriented documentation should show the relevant mass-spectrometric result and identify the sample to which it belongs. Depending on the laboratory and method, the report may include observed mass-to-charge values, calculated or expected mass information and spectrum data.
Ask whether the laboratory performed both tests
Do not assume that an HPLC purity report and an LC-MS identity report came from the same sample simply because they are presented together. Compare sample IDs, batch numbers, dates and report references.
Check whether the report is batch-specific
A technically valid historical report is not automatically evidence for a different production lot. Procurement documentation is strongest when the analytical report is explicitly linked to the same batch that will be supplied.
Request independent verification where available
If the laboratory offers a report lookup or verification page, retain the report identifier and verification link. This helps distinguish a laboratory-controlled record from an image or PDF hosted only by the supplier.
Do not infer untested parameters
HPLC and LC-MS do not automatically establish sterility, endotoxin status, microbial limits, elemental impurities or every other quality attribute. If those parameters matter to a specific laboratory workflow, they require their own appropriate testing and documentation.
Practical analytical-document request
- Material and sample name.
- Batch or lot number.
- Laboratory name.
- Report or sample ID.
- Test date.
- Analytical method.
- HPLC chromatogram and reported purity where applicable.
- LC-MS spectrum and identity-related result where applicable.
- Public verification route where available.
- Clear statement of what was not tested.
